In 1993, a man in the United States claimed that his wife suffered from a brain tumour caused by using a cellular phone. That caused mobile phone users all over the world to sit up and pay attention to the cellular telephones’ biological effects.

But studies have been inconclusive. Some studies suggest that the radio and microwaves emitted by cellular phones can affect the cognitive capability of the brain. Others reveal that they have effects on the tumours in laboratory mice. So many people are buying mobile phones, one wonders what the cumulative effect will be in the long run. According to a report published in The Straits Time on Aug 31, there are more than 170 million wireless subscribers in just the Asia-Pacific.

Each cell phone emits waves of between 800 and 2000 megahertz. These emissions are radiation or, to be exact, radio waves (below 1000 megahertz) and microwaves (above 1000 megahertz). Although these waves are similar to those generated by your microwave oven, radiation experts say cellular phones are not running at powers high enough to generate much heat. Actually, the waves from you mobile phone can heat up the tissues around the vicinity by just 0.1 degree Celsius if you place the antenna next you your head for a few minutes.
